“Speech that causes no distress, is truthful, pleasant, and beneficial, along with regular study of scriptures—this is called austerity of speech.”
Sanskrit
अनुद्वेगकरं वाक्यं सत्यं प्रियहितं च यत् | स्वाध्यायाभ्यसनं चैव वाङ्मयं तप उच्यते ||
Transliteration
anudvega-karaṁ vākyaṁ satyaṁ priya-hitaṁ ca yat svādhyāyābhyasanaṁ caiva vāṅ-mayaṁ tapa ucyate
Commentary
Speech austerity means words that are true, kind, and helpful without causing pain. Combined with scriptural study, this purifies our communication and its effects.
