Chapter 2: Transcendental Knowledgeसांख्ययोग
2:38
“Treating happiness and distress, gain and loss, victory and defeat alike, engage in battle. In this way you shall not incur sin.”
Sanskrit
सुखदुःखे समे कृत्वा लाभालाभौ जयाजयौ | ततो युद्धाय युज्यस्व नैवं पापमवाप्स्यसि ||
Transliteration
sukha-duḥkhe same kṛtvā lābhālābhau jayājayau tato yuddhāya yujyasva naivaṁ pāpam avāpsyasi
Commentary
This verse introduces the key concept of equanimity. Fighting with detachment from outcomes - pleasure/pain, gain/loss, victory/defeat - purifies the action. Such action does not bind the soul.
