Chapter 2
Chapter 2: Transcendental Knowledgeसांख्ययोग

2:70

As the ocean remains undisturbed though waters flow into it, one who remains unmoved by desires attains peace, not the one who strives to satisfy desires.

Sanskrit

आपूर्यमाणमचलप्रतिष्ठं समुद्रमापः प्रविशन्ति यद्वत् | तद्वत्कामा यं प्रविशन्ति सर्वे स शान्तिमाप्नोति न कामकामी ||

Transliteration

āpūryamāṇam acala-pratiṣṭhaṁ samudram āpaḥ praviśanti yadvat tadvat kāmā yaṁ praviśanti sarve sa śāntim āpnoti na kāma-kāmī

Commentary

The sage is compared to the ocean - vast, deep, and undisturbed despite rivers constantly flowing in. Peace comes not from fulfilling endless desires but from developing the inner stability that remains unmoved by them.
