“Austerity performed with foolish stubbornness, with self-torture, or to destroy another—that is declared tamasic.”
Sanskrit
मूढग्राहेणात्मनो यत्पीडया क्रियते तपः | परस्योत्सादनार्थं वा तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् ||
Transliteration
mūḍha-grāheṇātmano yat pīḍayā kriyate tapaḥ parasyotsādanārthaṁ vā tat tāmasam udāhṛtam
Commentary
Tamasic austerity involves ignorant self-punishment or practices aimed at harming others. Such practices come from delusion and cause harm rather than spiritual growth.
