“Austerity performed for honor, respect, and worship, or with hypocrisy—that is declared rajasic, unstable, and impermanent.”
Sanskrit
सत्कारमानपूजार्थं तपो दम्भेन चैव यत् | क्रियते तदिह प्रोक्तं राजसं चलमध्रुवम् ||
Transliteration
satkāra-māna-pūjārthaṁ tapo dambhena caiva yat kriyate tad iha proktaṁ rājasaṁ calam adhruvam
Commentary
Rajasic austerity is performed for recognition, respect, or showiness. Its results are unstable and temporary because the motivation lacks depth and sincerity.
