Chapter 2
Chapter 2: Transcendental Knowledgeसांख्ययोग

2:16

The unreal has no existence, and the real never ceases to be. The truth about both has been realized by the seers of Truth.

Sanskrit

नासतो विद्यते भावो नाभावो विद्यते सतः | उभयोरपि दृष्टोऽन्तस्त्वनयोस्तत्त्वदर्शिभिः ||

Transliteration

nāsato vidyate bhāvo nābhāvo vidyate sataḥ ubhayor api dṛṣṭo 'ntas tv anayos tattva-darśibhiḥ

Commentary

This profound verse distinguishes between the temporary material world (asat) and the eternal spiritual reality (sat). The body changes and perishes, but the soul endures. This distinction is central to Vedantic philosophy.
