“All living bodies subsist on food, which is produced from rains. Rains are produced from sacrifice, and sacrifice is born of prescribed duties.”
Sanskrit
अन्नाद्भवन्ति भूतानि पर्जन्यादन्नसम्भवः | यज्ञाद्भवति पर्जन्यो यज्ञः कर्मसमुद्भवः ||
Transliteration
annād bhavanti bhūtāni parjanyād anna-sambhavaḥ yajñād bhavati parjanyo yajñaḥ karma-samudbhavaḥ
Commentary
This verse describes the cosmic cycle: food sustains life, rain produces food, sacrifice brings rain, and sacrifice comes from action. Everything is interconnected in a sacred economy.
