“Knowledge is better than practice; meditation is better than knowledge; renunciation of the fruits of action is better than meditation. Peace immediately follows renunciation.”
Sanskrit
श्रेयो हि ज्ञानमभ्यासाज्ज्ञानाद्ध्यानं विशिष्यते | ध्यानात्कर्मफलत्यागस्त्यागाच्छान्तिरनन्तरम् ||
Transliteration
śreyo hi jñānam abhyāsāj jñānād dhyānaṁ viśiṣyate dhyānāt karma-phala-tyāgas tyāgāc chāntir anantaram
Commentary
A hierarchy of spiritual practices: understanding surpasses mechanical practice; meditation surpasses mere knowledge; renouncing results surpasses meditation. Detachment brings immediate peace.
