“In the production of the body and senses, nature is said to be the cause; in the experience of pleasure and pain, the person is said to be the cause.”
Sanskrit
कार्यकारणकर्तृत्वे हेतुः प्रकृतिरुच्यते | पुरुषः सुखदुःखानां भोक्तृत्वे हेतुरुच्यते ||
Transliteration
kārya-kāraṇa-kartṛtve hetuḥ prakṛtir ucyate puruṣaḥ sukha-duḥkhānāṁ bhoktṛtve hetur ucyate
Commentary
Prakṛti is responsible for the creation of body and senses—the instruments of action. Puruṣa, the conscious self, is responsible for experiencing the pleasures and pains that result.
