“Know that tamas, born of ignorance, is the deluder of all embodied beings. It binds by negligence, laziness, and sleep, O Bharata.”
Sanskrit
तमस्त्वज्ञानजं विद्धि मोहनं सर्वदेहिनाम् | प्रमादालस्यनिद्राभिस्तन्निबध्नाति भारत ||
Transliteration
tamas tv ajñāna-jaṁ viddhi mohanaṁ sarva-dehinām pramādālasya-nidrābhis tan nibadhnāti bhārata
Commentary
Tamas arises from ignorance and creates delusion. It binds through carelessness, sloth, and excessive sleep—the pull toward unconsciousness and inertia.
