“Those who perform terrible austerities not enjoined by scripture, possessed by hypocrisy and ego, driven by lust, attachment, and force—”
Sanskrit
अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः | दम्भाहङ्कारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः ||
Transliteration
aśāstra-vihitaṁ ghoraṁ tapyante ye tapo janāḥ dambhāhaṅkāra-saṁyuktāḥ kāma-rāga-balānvitāḥ
Commentary
Some perform extreme practices motivated by pride, ego, and desire rather than scriptural guidance. Such austerities, however impressive, arise from lower motives.
