Chapter 2
Chapter 2: Transcendental Knowledgeसांख्ययोग

2:20

The soul is never born, nor does it ever die; it has never come into being and will never cease to exist. It is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and primeval. The soul is not slain when the body is slain.

Sanskrit

न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः | अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे ||

Transliteration

na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin nāyaṁ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ ajo nityaḥ śāśvato 'yaṁ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre

Commentary

This profound verse describes the eternal nature of the soul (atman). Unlike the body which undergoes birth and death, the soul exists beyond time. Understanding this removes the fear of death and attachment to material existence.
